As a young artist I knew I would either become an artist or a
veterinarian when I grew up. A vet because my mother raised
and trained working dogs, an artist because she was also an
artist, and taught my twin brother, Dan and me how to truly
"see" the world around us, and put it down in drawings.
I chose to make my career in art, but occasionally need to be a vet to our sled dogs.
In the more than thirty years I've lived and painted in Alaska I've remained true to my
convictions to paint only what I truly know and understand. Because of my career in art,
I've traveled the world over, but have never swayed to vary my subject...Alaska.
When I paint, I relive a small portion of my own life, a small story that evokes an emotion.
It is that story, that emotion, that I'm trying to convey—not just the image. My life has been
filled with my paintings, from running my Iditarod races, traveling with my dog teams, living in
Indian and Eskimo villages, fishing and hunting, experiencing Alaska's wildlife up close and
personal—living life in Alaska to the fullest.
The art is Alaska, the emotions and story in my paintings are universal. Through my art I
want to share these stories...I hope you enjoy.
