His
originals are done in acrylic paint on masonite. Not all of us are art connoisseurs and buying art can be a confusing business. Below you will find a definition for art terms used in this site and more detailed information about collecting the art of Jon Van Zyle. Alaska Limited Editions: Exclusive publisher of Jon's posters since 1980 and fine art prints since 1996. Artique Limited: A publisher of Van Zyle prints prior to 1996 along with Voyageur Art, Hadley House, and Mill Pond Press. Artist Proof: Traditionally, ten percent of an edition that is held by the artist. Ex: Edition of 500 would be printed with an extra 50 for the artist, and numbered AP. Books: "Gallery Edition" books are printed in limited numbers, personally signed by Jon, and include a companion print—also signed and numbered. Jon has illustrated more than fourteen children books and has authored many books published by Epicenter Press. Collectables: Other forms of limited reproductions of the artist's work. This includes mugs, shirts, and other items. Commission: The special order of an original painting by Jon Van Zyle with a specific topic or image to be decided by the person ordering the work. Order a small, personal, commissioned painting of your family pet! Date of Issue: Posters and prints are reproductions of paintings. The issue date of a poster or print may be one to several years later than the date found on the painting, usually with a copyright symbol. Gallery Edition: Limited, signed and numbered edition of a book.
Giclee: A giclee (zhee-CLAY) is an individually produced, high-resolution, high-fidelity reproduction done on a special large format printer. Giclees are produced from digital scans of existing artwork. Giclees are superior to traditional lithography in several ways. The colors are brighter, last longer, and are so high-resolution that they are virtually continuous tone, rather than tiny dots. The range, or "gamut" of color for giclees is far beyond that of lithography. Iditarod: Alaska's annual, 1049-mile sled dog race, commemorating the 1925 serum run to Nome. Limited Edition: The published quantity of art reproductions printed and distributed, before the printing plates are destroyed. Medallion: A specially-minted miniature casting which accompanies some limited edition prints. Mini-Print: Smaller than normal print image, usually an open edition. New Releases: Brand new editions, recently released. Open Edition: Print quantities not fixed. May be reprinted at a later date. Original: One-of-a-kind art. With Jon that would be an acrylic painting on masonite© or a stone lithograph. Print: A collectable print reproduction, usually printed in editions of 500 to 1000, and always signed and numbered by the artist. Poster: A collectable printed reproduction, usually printed in greater quantities than a print. Most of Jon's posters are published in editions of 1250, 1500, 2500, or 5000. These are always personally signed by Jon. Out-of-Print: A piece or book is "out-of-print if it is no longer available wholesale, and general sold out on a retail level. If you do not see a piece listed on this site, it is most likely unavailable or out-of-print. Out-of-print books and prints are often available on the secondary market like E-bay for prints and Amazon.com for books. Serious collectors can find more information by visiting Art Finders. On occasion, we can help with a specific print as we may have a few in backstock available at current market price. Email your requests to vsturgis@earthlink.net. Stone Lithograph: A technique, and the resulting print(s), employing a hand-drawn and inked stone or stones to produce a very limited quantity of reproductions. These resulting prints are considered originals as each are different from the last, many are also hand colored by Jon. All of Jon's stone lithographs were produced in editions of 100 or fewer. |
